Branding:
“Brand” is about image
and reputation, so brand is way important.
Market
differentiation, values, positioning, identity, tipping
points… there are lots of buzz words to
navigate. In our experience these disciplines are almost
always far more than a ministry friend or staff person
or church graphic designer can tackle. We’ve worked
on building brands for leading ministries and given seminars & workshops
on these types of subjects for leading Christian Conferences
and have seen it first hand countless times. Branding,
marketing and such can do as much damage as good if not
properly executed. The idea of branding raises questions
as it seems to have those who love it or dislike it or
who misunderstand the concept. There are many definitions,
and much to talk or even debate about but in the end branding
comes down to some simple and very important realities.
Difficult
questions must be asked and answered, like “why are we doing
this” and “who are we and who are we trying to reach”? People
want more than vanilla. They are attracted to the Jesus in you, the way
God made you. If you look at the most “successful” (large or small)
people/organizations you’ll always see they exude personality. They are
recognizable by a certain set of identifiable traits. “Brand” is
about image and reputation, so brand is way important.
People participate in and buy brand. It makes them feel safe, worthy of their
investment of heart, soul, time, and money. A brand is symbolic of
all of who you are, everything connected you.
The
world isn’t looking for another Billy Graham
or _______________ (insert your favorite personalities
here). The world is looking for you to be the person or
organization God has uniquely called you to be. When you are truly fulfilling
the calling God has for you, you are naturally a walking living breathing brand,
whether you know it or not.
Great brands engender trust and by definition are unique,
powerful, meaningful, and instantly recognizable as they
rise above the clutter of the world around them, just by
